Two-dimensional imagery is regularly perceived in either portrait or landscape form. By using a square viewfinder this optical assumption of pictorial layout is queried – the viewer requested to look again and adjust to the equilateral perimeter. The square composition, more directly associated with abstract art, thus reshuffles our preconception of figurative space.
“6²“ presents the large-scale, same format canvases of six international artists, Paul Barnett, Nicole Heinzel, Michelle Lloyd, Enda O’ Donoghue, Cameron Rudd and Alex Tennigkeit . All members of the group are based at the Mengerzeile Artists’ Studios in Berlin.
